Fun and Games

This page was added for…, well, for fun! Since games, both virtual and physical, fall in our scope of interests and obsessions, we thought we would add a couple of simpler games or puzzles to our site. The two games allow players to test their skills and their memories. The slide puzzle will test one’s spatial skills, where the memory match will test one’s short-term memory. Both provide a level of challenge and amusement that should keep everyone engaged. The games were written using Java script, give them a try.

Slide Puzzle

This is a 5 x 5 numeric slide puzzle. The object of the game is to slide the tiles so that they are in order left to right and top to bottom. Since this is a number puzzle the tiles will need to be ordered 1 to 24 (to complete the grid, the 25th tile will be added upon a proper arrangement of the other 24 tiles). To slide a tile, left click on the desired tile. Note that tiles will only slide horizontally or vertically, not diagonally, and they will only slide into an empty space. If there is not an empty space adjacent to a selected tile, no movements will occur. An illustration of a completed puzzle is provided as an example.

The puzzle can be reset at any time by selecting the reset button. However, the puzzle also resets when the page is refreshed. So, be careful, as progress is not saved. When a puzzle is reset, the tiles are randomly distributed, making each session a new and different experience.

Memory Match

This game is a memory challenge. Under the 30 tiles are pairs of numbers from 1 to 15. The object of the game is to uncover all the pairs before the timer counts down to 0. Players are given 90 seconds to find the pairs by selecting two tiles at a time. Only two tiles at a time can be selected. If the two tiles selected uncover the same number, the spaces are blanked out. If the two tiles uncover different numbers, the spaces are re-covered with the tiles. Once a set of tiles is re-covered, another two tiles can be selected. Play continues until either all the numbers are revealed or until time expires.

The puzzle can only be reset after a round has been played by selecting the reset button. A round begins by selecting the Start button. Once a round begins the board is available for play. The puzzle also resets when the page is refreshed. So, be careful, as progress is not saved. When a puzzle is reset, the numbers are randomly distributed under the tiles, making each session a new and different experience.
